The purpose of the Picture Program is to acquaint the students at St. Joseph's School with a variety of prominent artists and styles of art and to teach them the terms they need to be able to evaluate and appreciate works of art as the encounter them. Our presenters for Kindergarten through Sixth Grade are parent volunteers; the Seventh and Eight Graders volunteer to present the pictures to their classmates.

For our presentations, we use poster-size reproductions from three different collections:

• Shorewood Collection prints (mounted on wood; brief descriptions on back)
• Art in Action: Enrichment Program I (teacher's manual available in School Library)
• Art in Action: Enrichment Program II (teacher's manual available in School Library).

The prints are kept in the School Library, along with basic reference materials to help the volunteers with their research. There is also a clipboard to sign prints in and out so that we can keep track of where they are. There are specific pictures assigned to each grade for each month of the school year, but volunteers may feel free to substitute other pictures, just as long as they do not use any of the pictures assigned to the other classes.

To supplement the materials available in the School Library and in our local public libraries, this page includes Internet links to images of the pictures, where available, as well as links to Internet sites containing information about the artists. Some resources are more complete than others and, since the sites may change at any time, volunteers should expect to have to do further research and use these links either as a kick-start or to fill-in interesting details which may help bring these artists and their works alive for our students.
