Those Were the Days Radio Players
Guest speakers: Mr. Larry Youngberg and Mr. Randy Larson

Chemist by day and radio sound man by night. That describes Mr. Larry Youngberg of Those Were The Days Radio Players. The Players are a group of talented people who are intent on bringing back the sounds and substance of old time radio. They recreate programs from the early days of radio and put on performances at schools, libraries and organizations throughout the Chicago area.

Mr. Youngberg and professional actor, Mr. Randy Larson, spoke to the Seventh and Eighth Graders about their 'avocation'. The students learned the history of various famous radio shows such as Jack Benny, Fibber McGee & Molly, and The Shadow. Vital to helping audiences 'picture' the scene and setting in a radio show are the sound effects. Mr. Youngberg gave a vivid demonstration of sound effects machines that he has constructed and uses in many productions. Our students really enjoyed the hands-on opportunity to try out the machines.

Our speakers closed their presentation by performing one of the favorite routines from the Abbot and Costello show, 'Whose On First'.

Thanks to both gentlemen for being so generous in sharing their time and talents with us.
